It has been demonstrated that it's not the intention to learn which is critical for later memory. It's not whether you are studying harder than everyone else, but rather the type of processing engaged at the time of encoding. Information that is processed meaningfully is well remembered even if there isn't an intention to retain it. The brain doesn't remember facts. It remembers connections.
